The ending IS sad, but also hopeful? Because it would be awful to keep living the way Benny has, and he will probably make new friends and find a new life for himself that doesn't entail hiding from the weather on a daily basis.
I know there is at least one person who has survived being hit by lightning as much as 8 times, but those seem like rare odds! You'd think they would be rare enough that he wouldn't keep getting hit, but electricity is clearly far too attracted to him. :O
